Good deal on that flywheel - it was on there! Did you see residue from any potential locking compound like you suspected?

I'd be curious to know the weight on that one. Also, the difference in finish/treatment of the two flywheels is very interesting. Given the appearance and markings on the one you have, I'm curious if it's aftermarket or off something else originally. All of the used flywheels I've seen online look more like mine.

Out of curiosity, do you have a high Amperage machine, or multi passes after heating or…?

The flywheel just removed weighs 6.4# also and yes it did have red loctite on it. Some scoring on the shaft but not as bad as I expected.
Mark, my welder is a Miller Syncrowave 250. Bought it new many years ago and it has never failed with hundreds of hours on it. I did a root pass, peened it and did a final pass.

I have a HTP Invertatig 221- so with a couple passes probably could have done it fine too.
that Miller is a very nice machine.

I’m always pretty cautious when welding something I have no idea what it is made from. Helps if there are some ‘scaps’ to test and setup up. But I’m by no means any expert welder.

Bill's ty looks to be in good shape and with all the trick part arriving it will be a sweet ride.
All bearings and seals will be replaced as well as the piston and rod kit.
With the new clutch basket I think a new clutch pack would a good move.
This would be a good time to get the cases / covers vapor blasted.

Awesome, John - thanks a bunch! Good to know we've no significant internal issues like the spare motor has.

I'm headed out on a 3-4 DS ride around Olympic National Park - more or less the Griptwister Tour. Some nice pics of the trip from 2019 are here, for those of you who haven't done it - fun trip.

I'll pester Mark upon my return for some vapor blasting privileges.

Gasket sets are on the way, new "trials specific" Boysen Reeds have arrived. However, no other engine parts ordered up yet. I've got quite the shopping list going that will come from 2-3 UK vendors, and I'm trying to do it in as few shipments as possible. Hopefully all will be ordered up by end of next week.

Looks like you did it last time, but if you can do the Lake Quinault ‘loop’ (North
Shore, North Fork, Big Bridge, Graves ck and South Shore) try to do it early in the morning. I worked there 5 years and would see elk all the time.

I either need to modify my fixture for separating the crank or just build a new one. Considering the possibility of all 4 of these cranks needing new rod kits, I think I'll just make a new one. There was some surface rust in the gearbox but none on the finished surfaces so it cleaned up ok. I did polish all the shaft locations that ride on non roller bearing surfaces. It may smooth the gear change slightly. The head bolts and studs were cleaned and ospho'd to stop future corrosion.

Given that spare motor has a shot gearbox, maybe we should fetch this. Might be nice to have a spare...

The spare motor needs everything, so that's a start. Too bad it isn't a complete gearbox with forks, drum and selector. There's another seller on ebay that has the other parts needed. I can't post the link here for some reason.
