WINTER PROJECTS

If in doubt, or it doesn't seem to fit elsewhere - put it here.

You're not kidding, the two bikes look like they are same stage, I just need to toss my tank on for the photo. I solicited my request for entry into the WVM, so we will see if they let me in, and if so, hope to see you at the next meet up.

Is your Spitfire a MK II? My 67 Hornet is a 'east coast' model with hi-pipes. A lighting kit was available to make it street legal. Should be fun projects.

Yes it is a Spitfire MKII. From what I understand a pretty bad ass bike for that year.

I’m about done with the AJP engine rebuild. I modified a Honda exhaust to fit and welded on an O2 bung to make tuning easier. Bigger cam, PWK carb and more flowing exhaust. Plus I cleaned up the ports a bit.

It has quite noticeably more power, still no powerhouse, but a lot more fun. Waiting on swingarm and linkage bearings. Plus the new owner has a Clake2 for me to convert and install.

After I finish, I will work some more on the Benelli 175 Enduro and 250 Supersport. Oh yeah, need to finish 65cc engine (almost done).

Garage is coming along. Just did the walk through with the electrician. It's been interesting trying to plan for both a shop in the near term and potential apartment/bnb in the future. Aside from "more space" any must haves suggestions before the walls get buttoned up?

Looking really nice Vince. If possible I would consider extra ceiling support for a winch/hoist capable of 500#. I added the support but haven't added the track yet. I wish I had put in a couple more air hose locations also. Bet you are looking forward to having the added shop space for your projects.

Thanks John. In terms of support for a ceiling hoist, what would be the typical applications so I understand where and how to lay it out? I place two deeper footings in one bay of the garage for a two post lift, and I'm thinking a hoist support above what would be the engine bay of a vehicle on the lift may be the most logical location.

My suggestion for a hoist is more for assisting in getting projects up on a work bench. Some things are just too awkward for one guy to pick up, or hold in place when fitting with another part. Here's one example.

My ceiling has 2x12 rafters at 12" centers for extra strength.

If possible, I would install conduit for network and power. Just leave mule tape in for now.

I chose to run all my power in exposed conduit. I didn’t want to drill all those holes in the studs, plus it is a LOT easier to modify later and insulation. (I recommend Rockwool).

You can never have too many outlets.
I ran my air lines (oversized) exposed also. That way I can add more drops or extensions later if I want.

I got sidetracked from my vintage projects to do a new top end on my 18 Beta Xtrainer.

Rings were still in spec, but a lot of buildup on the PV (exhaust valve for 2-strokes) so it was not opening all the way. Since I rarely am over 1/8 throttle and almost alway slow rpm, that does not suprise me too much.
I replaced the piston/pin/bearing/rings anyway. Even though I could have gotten quite a few more hours.

Nice and clean now- all back together and runs great.
