Double Trouble

If in doubt, or it doesn't seem to fit elsewhere - put it here.

I run the numbers for the cams and other than a lot of duration they are pretty normal. (57/74)-(74/54). Interesting that the intake duration is more than the exhaust. It may be the tappets have been reversed.
That could make this to happen. Will hopefully know more when the Norris cam catalog arrives.

Mocked up a distribution manifold for engine oil. It may require 2 more ports for the rocker feeds. Either that or a restricted 'y' in the return lines. Some guys blocked of the feed and squirted oil on the rockers just before a run. Running nitro requires changing oil after every run so with the drain cocks at the manifold it simplifies the process.

The Norris catalog arrived which gives the details for the 'D' grind cams. What it doesn't mention is which tappets or rockers are used.
I will run the numbers again using 'R' tappets on both the intake and exhaust to see if I can match the 314º duration they show. It appears they are using a 1.15 : 1 ratio to get the .435 lift at the valve. Stock rockers are 1.11 : 1.

I've decided not to spend $700 to have the damaged cylinder nikasil coated. Instead I will fill the damaged area with silver solder where the rusty rings left a groove. I did some testing on a junk cylinder to test flow and adhesion and to see if the process distorted the bore. All indications are that it will work. I will pre-heat the cylinder which will speed up the soldering which had to be between 1200 and 1400º. I'll worry about the bore finish later. Nothing gambled, nothing gained.

While waiting for the crankshaft I spent some time fabricating a new oil tank. I like the looks of the round tank
but the square tube will work ok.

The top will have a filler neck and a vent tube. The bottom will have a outlet port, an return port and a drain.
The return port will have a internal tube going from the bottom fitting to the top to help circulate the oil.

So while waiting on the small internal return tube for the oil tank I built a oil catch can.

The timed breather tubes from each engine will go to this tank. Back in the day they vented them into a beer can wired to the frame.

What was the choice of beer cans back in the day? Coors or Schlitz?
Always wear protective gear. Usually SPF 30 will do.

My choice would have been Coors.

I screwed up and forgot the magneto is located here so had to modify the ports and breather to clear it.

The new 'R' tappets wouldn't fit so had to lap the tappet block with diamond lapping compound on the Acrolap tool.
